The Falcon X3 handheld computer has been upgraded by its maker, Datalogic, and now takes the name Falcon X3+. It has a number of advances over its predecessor, including significantly higher wireless communications throughput with the 802.11n dual band Wi-Fi radio, a full VGA display, a faster processor, more memory, and a more rugged specification.

There is also a new ability to read 2D barcodes at extreme distances; the company quotes a range of 9 to 490 cm for non-reflective labels, and up to 1,509 cm for reflective ones.

Retained from the old model is the display plus handgrip/keyboard format. The processor is a Marvell XScale PXA310 unit rated at 806MHz, which comes with 256MB of RAM and 1GB of flash memory. The operating system can be Microsoft Windows CE 6.0 Professional or Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5.

Other features include a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 scan window and a rubberised polycarbonate enclosure. The dust/water ingress rating is IP65,and the drop spec on to concrete is 1.8m / 6.0ft. The company says it has been tested for 1,500 random sequential falls from 1m/3.3ft.

There is a 3.1 megapixel camera.
