Given the relentless rise of BYOD (bring your own device) in the world of mobile computing, it’s perhaps no surprise that reseller Varlink is now offering a device for toughening up the Apple iPad.

Honeywell’s Captuvo SL62 Enterprise Sled Apple iPad Mini, launched only this year, cloaks the standard iPad device in a tough outer case. Varlink says it transforms the tablet into an enterprise-ready device for those working in the retail, hospitality and field service industries.

A key feature is an integrated 1D and 2D barcode scanner, which users Honeywell’s advanced Adaptus 6.0 imaging technology. Optional extras include a magnetic-stripe reader. The case is said to have a dust and water ingress resistance of IP30, and the ability to withstand 1.2 metre drops to concrete.

Honeywell says the combined resources of the sled and iPad itself will allow eight hours of continuous operation per shift.

Included is a software development kit for Apple’s iOS 6 and iOS 7 operating systems.
