Handheld Group is calling its latest handheld computer a rugged PDA, reviving a description from the days before the emergence of “enterprise assistants” and the like. Whatever you call it, Handheld says it wants the Nautiz X8 to be seen as quite simply the world’s best handheld computer.

The X8 is certainly impressive, boasting an ultra-fast 1.5GHz 4470 dual-core processor from Texas Instruments, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of NAND flash memory. It also has a 5200mAh li-ion battery with a claimed life of up to 12 hours per charge, and a high IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, along with MIL-STD-810G shock resistance: all features at or near the top of their range.

The operating system can be either Android 4.2.2 or Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5.3.

The X8 has the enterprise assistant format of a large 4.7in ultra-bright capacitive multi-touch screen, which is fitted with chemically strengthened Asahi Dragontrail glass. In addition, this surmounts a separate physical numeric keyboard for rapid data input.

Other features include a u-blox GPS receiver, Bluetooth 2.0, and 802.11b/g/n WLAN functionality, as well as connectivity through GSM/UMTS or CDMA phone/data transmission. There is an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash.
