Severn Trent Water has rolled out a wide-ranging fleet scheduling and mobile job management package across its sludge tankering collection and disposal operations, with key elements provided by Paragon and TranSend Solutions.

Objectives include optimising tanker schedules to take into account treatment centre capacity and transport costs; improving the visibility tankers; and real-time communication with drivers. Benefits are expected to include improved fleet utilisation, and a reduction in the need to use external contract vehicles.

Paragon’s Integrated Fleets system is being used for both operational route scheduling and strategic modelling. It includes INRIX-based road speed data and HERE street level map content with bridge height information.

TranSend’s industry-specific mobile solution is providing drivers with real-time job information via Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Android devices. Through the tablets, TranSend will provide accurate, real-time information that confirms collections and deliveries, recording with volume, location and time, and feeding the information back to the office.

Live GPS tracking is also included, and is expected to help the organisation to reallocate jobs and allocate “reactive” jobs.

Severn Trent Water is said to be the largest water and waste water company in the UK, serving more than 4.2 million homes and business customers.
