The market for trailer telematics is likely to grow rapidly over the next few years, according to consultancy Frost & Sullivan. It reckons the market in both Europe and America is under-penetrated, and "immense opportunities" await vendors.

The trailer telematics market has always been a tricky one for operators to get to grips with. In theory, trailers can be monitored by telematics systems fitted in the tractor units that pull them – a fact that appears to reduce the value of fitting specialist telematics equipment in each trailer.

However, trailers are frequently swapped and are often left standing, so the asset tracking aspect of telematics can be valuable. Frost confirms that trailer location and tracking represent the most developed applications, but adds that security concerns are also prompting growing adoption.

The are also attractions for trailer leasing companies, who can use telematics to monitor what happens to their equipment in the field, and which customer has which units.

Frost says efforts are being made to standardise enabling technologies, and prices are falling, which helps users. But manufacturers are tending to work in partnership with one another to understand how best to tackle the market.

The consultancy’s findings are published Strategic Analysis of the European Trailer Telematics Market.
