Although digital pens seem to have become synonymous with the Anoto system, which relates pen movements to special paper, there are other approaches to digitising freehand text.

A new offering in this field comes from Belgian developer IRIS Group, whose IRISNotes Express 2 pen not only captures handwriting and transmits it to a suitable device in its original form; it also attempts to convert it through optical recognition software to editable text.

The system uses IRIS’s patented capture device, which you place at the top centre or corner of the page. Then it either transmits the text to a PC in real time, or stores up to 100 pages for uploading later.

The Executive 2 version can also be used to interact directly with supporting software, acting as a mouse and providing access to pen tools provided in the software.

Versions are available for input into iPads and iPhones and into Android and BlackBerry devices.
