A new all-in-one in-vehicle computer from Nexcom is being offered in the UK through Rugged Mobile Systems.

The VMC 1000 has some features in common with the existing VTC 1000, launched last year, including a high-brightness 7in screen. It features an Intel Atom E640 processor running at 1.0 GHz, and includes GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi wireless networking.

It is designed for use with external aerials, which the company says will give significantly improved signal coverage when compared with devices that use internal antennae.

The unit can be used with a variety of power supplies from 6 to 36 volts, and has smart power management functionality that includes low-voltage protection and ignition delay. The size is 8.5 cm wide by 5 cm high by 14 cm.

Rugged Mobile Systems says it sees a wide range of potential applications for the device, notably in vehicles such as refuse collectors, gritters, street sweepers, road maintenance vehicles and heavy-duty off-road equipment. The unit is also suitable for forklift trucks, the company says.
