Stories about people who have recovered stolen vehicles by tracking them always appeal to us, and Quartix has told us about one that was particularly intriguing.

What caught our attention is that it wasn’t the police who did the tracking, as often happens; the company’s operations manager himself tracked the vehicle as the thieves fled with the van.

The vehicle belonged to Delta Security, and was stolen in Walthamstow, north London. The driver immediately phoned his office to let them know, and operations manager Dave Mundy logged on to the Quartix web site and was able to monitor the precise location of the vehicle. So he rang the police and told them he could see where it was.

He goes on: "A clear, calm voice told me to go ahead, and the next few minutes were spent in intense excitement as my police contact relayed details to patrol cars in the area and told me to keep the information coming."

Eventually the van was dumped in a yard off the North Circular Road, and the police arrived barely two minutes later. The thieves had already left the scene, apparently alerted by the police sirens, but at least the vehicle was undamaged.

Delta has 14 vehicles with Quartix tracking systems, and is no doubt glad now about the investment. Mundy says it also improves efficiency and fuel consumption, and helps with congestion charge management.
