An ATEX-certified version of the Boston 8550 handheld computer has been launched by manufacturer Belgravium. Certification makes it suitable for use in explosive atmospheres.

The ATEX and IECEx certification is to zone 2 (gas, mist and vapour risk) and zone 22 (dust risk).

In most respects the ATEX version is similar to the standard model. It features a Marvel PXA270 processor running at 624MHz, and has 64MB of RAN (128MB optional), plus 128MB of flash memory. The operating system is Windows CE.

The water and dust ingress rating is IP65, making the unit pretty tough as well as safe. It also has high-impact Airmatic rubber "bumpers" to protect it against knocks.

It has six user-defined function keys, and alpha character input is available as a option.

Other features include Wi-Fi b/g wireless networking, Bluetooth 2.0, GSM/GPRS voice and data, a 3 megapixel camera and SIRF IV GPS location.

ATEX certification relates to UE 94/9/EC, and stands for a French term (Appareils destinés à être utilisés en ATmosphères Explosives). The similar IEC standard was established by the International Electrotechnical Commission.
