As interest grows in use of the Android operating system for industrial mobile devices, developers and users are likely to welcome the launch of an application development kit for Android Embedded devices. It’s from Digi International, which claims it is the first such kit on the market.

The kit includes drivers and unique Digi software extensions, and the company claims it can cut months from the typical a development time for applications. Digi points out that its iDigi Cloud Connector for Android enables users to "cloud-enable" their devices a single line of software code.

Also included are module peripheral drivers and APIs necessary for product development, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi and others. Digi says the kit provides a complete integrated development environment and a single source for hardware and software.

It adds that embedded applications can be created in Java with no specialised hardware knowledge – a feature that should help programmers with Java and Android application expertise to develop software for embedded products.
