DS Smith Packaging, the packaging giant, has chosen JLT 1214 series ultra-rugged fixed-mount PCs with solid state disk drives for the forklift trucks at three of its UK sites (Rawcliffe, Featherstone and North Fields in Louth). They were supplied by JLT partner Mobexx.

DS Smith says the solid state drives were considered ideal because the forklift trucks sometimes run over uneven ground, which could cause shock damage to conventional disks.

The 12in screen in-vehicle computers run the mobile side of DS Smith Packaging’s paperless business systems. They provide the wireless interface for the forklift drivers to the back office system. They run a customised version of the Windows XP operating system, and send jobs back to the host software using Citrix.

In the warehouse and for despatching orders, picking lists are sent automatically to the PCs. Drivers scan each item picked using a Motorola Symbol LS3408ER long-range bar code scanner.

For production, the JLTs work with manufacturing. Because the company runs a perpetual inventory, the computers are also considered essential for stock taking.

The decision to standardise on JLT follows extensive use at the three key sites, where the computers have been tested in extreme conditions.
