Handheld, the Swedish ruggedised mobile computer maker, has expanded into the rugged notebook computer market, and has started strongly with its Algiz XRW.

The company already offers several other models in its Algiz range, but these are tablets, whereas the XRW breaks new ground.

It is a fully rugged model with a 10.1-inch wide-screen format display featuring sunlight-readable MaxView screen technology. The processor behind it is Intel’s Atom, running at a very sprightly 2 GHz, while the operating system is Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate.

Interestingly, the standard storage medium is a 64 GB solid state disk, while 2GB of RAM is supplied. Also standard are Bluetooth, wireless networking and GPS, as well as a built-in 2-megapixel autofocus camera that allows video conferencing in the field.

You can also add an optional 3G modem to provide high-speed GSM/UMTS/EVDO data transmission. The Algiz XRW is ready for Gobi 2000 technology, and the company says this means users can choose of wireless frequency anywhere in the world. It also says the 57.6 Wh battery should works for eight hours on a single charge.

The water and dust resistance rating is IP65, and shock testing is quoted as to MIL-STD-810F standard.
